The races took place on Sunday 7th April over the 4.2 mile river Thames course between Putney Bridge and Mortlake.

This was the first time that Wise Security were contracted as the sole Security and Safety Steward  supplier and felt very honoured to be given the responsibility for this most prestigious event.  In addition to providing approximately 150 staff along the event route WSSL also had staff at the start and finish line, this was in addition to supplying all security staff for the pre event load and race preparation as well as all after event requirements. With Dan Frost as the WSSL event manager and James Wise coordinating activities from the event control room they maintained a close liaison with the Race Director and were pleased to receive her plaudits for a job well done at the end of the day.  It is pleasing to say that arrangements are already in place for WSSL to supply the staffing for next year’s race.

James Wise said “Having watched the race so many times on television it was a great experience to work with the event team in the Control Room and see first hand all that goes on for the worlds best known river race. I’m sure that being able to utilise so many of our staff with waterside safety experience from supplying staff to the Tall Ships events for some years proved to be a great help”.

The race itself was the 165th men’s and the 74th women’s race between these two colleges. At 14.13 hours the women’s race started and then at 15.10 hours it was the turn of the men with this year’s Cambridge crew having the Gold winning Olympian James Cracknell in their crew.  After tossing a coin for start position Cambridge soon established their superiority in both the women’s and men’s races and finished up as victors in both.

The races were viewed by in excess of 250,000 people along the river banks and by over 15 million people worldwide on television.

Wise Security would like to thank The Boat Race for the opportunity of being involved this year and look forward to next year’s event.
